Great Co-Op Games for Couples

Great Co-Op Games for Couples

Play together, stay together.

Whether you're dating, recently engaged, newly-weds or experienced spouses or partners, gaming is a great way to stimulate your minds and learn to play well together- on and off the simulated battlefield.

It's not a recent discovery that playing video games are therapeutic in relieving stress and even pain by means of distraction as well as keeping your brain sharp and alert. But an added benefit offered to couples playing the same game together is team building, problem solving, and cerebral connection established from the co-operative gaming mode offered on select contemporary games.

My husband and I, as many of our peers have, grew up as game-obsessed Millennials playing various one player games throughout the history of PlayStation gaming specifically. Single player gaming provided exclusivity in decision making and success in your own impenetrable virtual missions. Being both Aries', single player gaming was very influential in our self-confidence and drive to get the job done on our own.

After a while, we began to take turns playing games and found that we both felt more connected and had more fun whilst playing together! We checked out some reviews on some co-operative games, although they were limited, and started our Co-op journey to closeness!

Here are 8 great PlayStation 3 games to try out with your significant other this weekend! Let the games begin!

Little Big Planet 2

Difficulty: Beginner

Available on: PlayStation 3

Its extraordinarily imaginative gamescape is surprisingly solely comprised of household items crafted together to create a linear world of whim and fantasy maze through which you travel to reach the end stage which progresses the story.

Not only is this game single and two-player (online and offline), you can even have 3 players joined in at one time- fun for the whole family! And if you two like to make your own fun when gaming, this game has a great building platform that allows you to create your own levels that other online players can play.

Almost every aspect of Little Bit Planet 2 is customizable from your sackboy's costume to the levels themselves! Be ready to play right out of the box whether you're flying solo or with a buddy.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh

Difficulty: Beginner

Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Whether or not you or your bae is a comic book fan, if you're into the raw brutal game play seen in the likes of games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted, and even Mortal Kombat, you're both sure to enjoy the knockouts and sucker punches of Watchmen: The End is Nigh.

Moreover, not only is it fun and violent, it's unconventionally easy to play- even for a quintessential  Action/Beat Em' Up game. If you or your lover are new to gaming but still want to effectively kick the tar out of some lowly street thug for the greater good of the city, Watchmen is the perfect pick up and play game even for newbies. The art and design are spectacular and the comic book-esque cut scenes are entertaining and original.

Minecraft PlayStation 3 Edition

Difficulty: Beginner

Available on: Android, PC, Xbox/Xbox One, PS3

Would the both of you benefit from a relaxing frolic in an all-terrain pixelated world of creative freedom to compensate for the lack of production you've experienced in your somehow still busy work day? Try Minecraft on for size. It's low stress and highly addictive as it's completely cultivated and constructed by you, the player(s).

Be it one of you is playing the role of hunter-gatherer while the other plans the layout of your handmade village, or partnering up for a deep cave excavation, or just a journey across the map into unknown territory; the team building and quiet moments just sitting together and connecting are what makes this one of the best co-op for couples games on this list!

Resident Evil 5

Difficulty: Challenging

Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Who hasn't dreamed of blowing the heads off of rotting zombies in the wilderness of Africa? I know I have! So you could imagine my delight after booting up Resident Evil 5 and discovering that I and my co-op husband will be doing just that in Capcom's fifth installment of their Resident Evil games.

The two of you will play as Chris Redfield and newcomer Sheva Alomar, battling the forces of militarized evil and saving the world from- you guessed it- utter annihilation of the undead sort.

A word of caution when considering this game, as well as Resident Evil 6: It's not exactly a beginners game. Tank controlled maneuvering paired with heavy aim, shoot, reloading can take some getting used to if you or your partner are not experienced in action/shoot em' up games. Once the handling is mastered, it's a great blast! Just keep in mind you might find out your bae isn't always so calm under pressure while playing this one...

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Difficulty: Varies

Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U

It's the eighth racing game in the Sonic the Hedgehog Series and it shows. It's taken every aspect of a good console racing game and seamlessly blended them together in this "high octane" whirlwind of light, colors and amazing sounds, especially if you've got a subwoofer!

The character selection is vast enough that leveling them all up will take time, and help. The tournament style story progression is exciting and not too redundant despite stages being reused at different difficulties.

Of all the racing games I've played, split-screen and otherwise, this is the most engaging and high energy game I've ever played. It's a cross between Need for Speed because of drifting being a key factor in power boosting, and Mario Kart as you have various weapons and defensive items you gain on the track which can be used on others or yourself, respectively. Start your engines... GO!!

Singstar

Difficulty: Varies

Available on: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do! Now that you're warmed up, let's here you and your bad romance belt it out to Creed, Coldplay, Rihanna and who ever else decides to join the party in PlayStation's Singstar.

I love to sing and our PlayStation 2 came with Singstar and two microphones. Although we bought the PS2 specifically to play Kingdom Hearts, we found ourselves up past midnight shouting Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" and other top obnoxious hits until well past midnight.

We invested in a new edition of Singstar and found it to be just as hilarious and fun. Great for the solo artist and the Milli-Vanilli all the same. Kick out the jams! Just make sure you've got all the necessary equipment.

The Lego Games

Difficulty: Easy

Available on: Check here for availability.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me, the force is strong with this one, it's leviosa, not leviosa, HULK SMASH! If you like the sound of any of that, you'll love the gameplay of any of the Lego games based off of beloved modern film and franchise. It's easy enough that the kids can join in too, all while relieving your nostalgia kick and then some. Lego really took the time to make each game as unique and entertaining as it's theme's original.

You'll find yourself inside the castle of Hogwarts, the Pirate infested 18th century Caribbean, the planets of galaxies far, far away and the streets of Iron Man's New York City - and even X-Mansion! Hogwarts- I had you at Hogwarts, right? The dynamic split screen makes it easy to play together or veer off on your own without spoiling the co-op gaming fun. The art and design on all of these games is also epic. There are many Lego games available, here's a list! One word of caution on these games, they tend to freeze. SAVE OFTEN.

Portal 2

Difficulty: Challenging

Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

You both think you're so clever don't you? Well lets see who figures out the metaphysical puzzles in each elaborate stage of the game as you try to escape a mysterious corporation with talking heads everywhere. You shoot a hole to enter, shoot another one to exit from, escape. Sounds simple, right?

Maybe not...What can be said of a game that makes perfect sense, yet at times cannot be made heads or tails of... It's almost like love!

Borderlands

Difficulty: Challenging

Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC

One of the most charming couching co-op games available. It can go the distance as it can be played over and over and easily breaks the monotony of the every day gaming experience. The game has many easter eggs that aren't exactly hidden from plain site. If letting off some steam together on a bunch of blood-thirsty bandits is more of you and your significant others' speed, this game is sure to become a staple in your evening decompression ritual. It's great played together and separately! One of my favorite co-op games.

Goat Simulator

Difficulty: Beginner

Available on: PlayStation 3

Not very much can be- or should be said about Goat Simulator. It's physics-based, gut-busting, disgusting, and life changing to say the least. You're essentially a goat running a muck on an unsuspecting town. It's basically like a game of "Who's Line is it Anyway?" where the game is made up and the points don't matter. Just try not to play this with your significant other after a fight and not have it turn the night around! Silly, ridiculous fun.

These are of course to name a few! So keep checking back for more updates as more co-operative games surface and we get our grubby hands on them.
